The most recent census of 2011 found there were nearly 12,000 vacant homes in Clare, and that the vacancy rate in Liscannor, Kilkee, Lahinch, Mountshannon, Bunratty and Ballyvaughan were all at least 50%.
Now, local representatives are calling on the government to introduce a Vacant Housing Incentive Scheme in order to ensure the maximum level of non-holiday homes are used.
