Council Seeks A Further 30 Homes To Tackle Social Housing List

A Clare County Council is seeking to purchase a further thirty homes in order to help tackle the county's social housing need.

The local authority has agreed to buy a total of 57 dwellings throughout the county – contracts have been signed for 27 homes, while in the case of a further 15, transactions have already been closed.

There has been a particular emphasis on the county's main towns including Kilrush and Shannon with over half of the homes involved located in the Ennis area as these towns have a high social housing need.

Th council is now seeking approval for a further 30 homes to help reduce the social housing list on which there is over 3,300 people.

Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy is a member of Clare County Council's Housing Committee – he says the local authority is doing everything in its power to reduce the number of people waiting on social housing.

Clare County Council says there's currently no plans to use modular housing to help reduce the social housing list but the local authority says it will be guided by Department policy in this area.

The so-called "posh prefabs", which are cheaper than traditional housing, are being proposed as a solution to the homeless problem in Dublin.

A Kilrush-based company is in the running for the modular housing contract there.

Nordman Profile Limited is taking part in a demonstration of the units. Its Managing Director Pat Kilkenny says the company has been given a unique opportunity.
