Elected representatives in Clare appear to be barking up the wrong tree in their efforts to secure dog friendly beach areas in this county.
It comes however as a fresh approach has been made for the local authority to create a public dog park.
Just across the border, Limerick City and County Council are understood to be preparing dog park number four, following successful ventures in Mungret, Baggot Estate, and Newcastle West.
Following a promise to form a committee to identify a site and funding for a dop park in the Shannon Municipal District in July, Clare County Council has now pledged to engage with Limerick’s staff to discuss the next steps.
Ardnacrusha Fianna Fáil Councillor Rachel Hartigan says it’s a step in the right direction.
Another proposal to go before the council however has been firmly rebuffed.
Ennis Councillor Antoinette Baker Bashua’s request for designated dog friendly areas on selected beaches and allowing dogs earlier access were denied on environmental grounds,
In its response, the local authority stated that even a single dog fouling event has the potential to fail an area with respect to water quality of up to two tennis courts in size.
However Cllr Baker Bashua believes the initiative is worth trialing on a pilot basis.
