Clare County Council has turned down one of two plans to build a motorway service station on the M18.

Applegreen's development involved the removal of abandoned buildings at Latoon, and then constructing a new service station which would have included a forecourt and shop including cafes or restaurants and parking spaces for over 200 vehicles.

It was proposed that the facility would be open 24 hours a day and the company said 300 jobs would have been created as a result.

Now though, Clare County Council has told the company that it's refusing permission for the development.

The local authority says the site in question is an unzoned, unserviced rural area and the proposed works would be contrary to the objectives of a development plan.

The Council has also found defincies in the Traffic and Transport plan submitted with the application.

Ennis Chamber and Dromoland Castle Holdings were among those who had objected, along with Supermacs founder Pat McDonagh who has lodged a separate application for another service station along the M18 on the outskirts of Ennis.

Applegreen has the right to appeal the decision to An Bord Pleanala.
