Clare County Council has refused an application to erect a telecommunications mast in rural West Clare.

Hibernian Cellular Networks had sought permission to construct the 30m high structure, and other associated works, at Knocknagarhoon, Kilkee, but were met with opposition from concerned locals.

In their submissions to the Council, some claimed that the mast would be an eyesore on the landscape, argued it would not benefit the community, and also expressed concerns about a potential impact on peoples’ health.

In refusing permission, Clare County Council considered factors including the elevated and visually prominent location of the site, and its proximity to a recorded archaeological monument.

Their decision can be appealed to An Bord Pleanala.
