Council Reject Proposal for Change to Commercial Rates

Clare County Council has voted to reject a proposal which aimed to 'level the playing field' for small traders and town centres.

The local authority has debated a motion which, if passed, would have seen commercial rates levied on the car parks of out of town retail sectors.

However, the plan was rejected in a narrow vote, as some local representatives felt more suitable ways of boosting town centres could be found.

However, Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy, who had suggested the plan, feels it should have been backed.
