Clare County Council will consider a proposal to explore developing a League of Ireland Soccer team in this county.

The motion will go before the next meeting of the local authority next week.

The Banner County currently has no team competing in either the SSE Airtricity Men’s and Women’s Premier Division, or First Division.

This could be on course to change though, a motion going before Clare County Council on Monday will ask that the local authority engage with the necessary stakeholders here to go about setting up a team.

Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle who’s bringing the idea forward believes it would have major social and sporting benefits.

The lack of a county team hasn’t stopped Clare players competing in the Irish top tier and even playing professionally abroad, with Barry Cotter at Ipswich and Dylan Casey’s past tenure at Leicester City and Millwall just two notable examples.

On the women’s front Ennis native Laurie Ryan has had major success at Athlone Town, securing a player of the year nomination last year, while many more Banner natives are lining out for the likes of Galway United, Peamount United and Cork City.

Clarecastle based former Treaty United Academy Coach Declan Farmer insists there’s no question about the talent available or demand for a Clare club.
