Clare County Council has confirmed it’s monitoring conditions at Lough Derg following an outbreak of Algal Bloom in parts of Tipperary.
Tipperary County Council has issued a public advisory notice, which is in place until Monday, advising the public to exercise caution and keep animals away from the area.
In a statement to Clare FM, Clare County Council says it’s ‘not aware of any conditions comparable to those reported on the Tipperary side having been observed to date’.
The local authority says the situation is under review and that public health advice will be issued upon the identification of any significant bloom.
Statement from Clare County Council:
“Clare County Council is aware of reports of cyanobacterial (blue-green algae) blooms on parts of Lough Derg within County Tipperary.
Clare County Council is not aware of any conditions comparable to those reported on the Tipperary side having been observed to date.
The situation remains under review and Council staff will continue to monitor conditions on the Clare side of the lake.
Should any significant bloom be identified, the appropriate public health advice will be issued in consultation with relevant agencies.”
