Council Increases Social Housing Portfolio By 2.6% Last Year

Clare County Council increased its social housing portfolio by less than 3% in 2021.

At the end of last year, the local authority had ownership of 2,670 homes.

The 2021 Performance Indicator Report by the National Oversight and Audit Commission (NOAC) reports that Clare County Council owned 2,600 properties at the beginning of the year.

During the course of the year they acquired 79 additional houses, before selling nine of those, leaving their final tally at 2,670 homes.

Of those, 3.19% were vacant, meaning approximately 85 homes were idle at the end of 2021.

The report shows that the average time to re-let a social house in Clare is nearly 33 weeks and comes at an average cost of over €20,000 to the local authority.

Clare County Council spent approximately €875 per house on maintenance in 2021.

It comes as 63% of the adults in Clare’s emergency accommodation are recorded as long-term homeless.
