Planning permission was granted for 96 new houses and six new apartments in Clare between January and March of this year.

New CSO figures outline how 50 of the houses are one-off development, the highest number recorded in the start of any year since 2010.

One application for 46 homes was also granted – this was in the Clarecastle area.

The green light was also given for six new flats.

The figures mark a gradual recovery in the local construction sector, but are still a long way short of the peak of the property boom when, at times, it was not unusual for permission to be granted for over 200 new homes throughout the county each month.

Nationally, the first quarter of 2017 has seen a 50% increase in the number of homes for which planning permission has been granted.
