Council Defends Pace Of Progress On Shannon Flood Protection Works

Clare County Council has defended the pace of progress on flood relief works in Shannon.

€27 million in Government funding was allocated towards the Shannon Town and Environs Flood Relief Scheme received in 2018.

However, at a special meeting of Shannon Municipal District Councillors, where the Schedule of Municipal District Works for 2023 was adopted, there was some criticism over the speed of delivery and value for money of some projects.

This week’s meeting of Shannon Councillors has seen the allocation of 5.5 million euro for the municipal district in 2023.

However, during the course of the meeting, one Councilor described it as a “copy and paste job”, despite an increase in funding of 1.7 million on last year’s figure.

Councilor Gerry Flynn also said it’s “surprising how long a project takes” and queried the value for money of some projects.

The Shannon Independent Councillor is questioning the pace at which the Shannon Town and Environs Flood Relief Scheme is progressing, five years on from being granted 27 million euro in funding.

Clare County Council is reassuring, however, that the scheme is moving forward, and that an update will be presented to Councillors at their monthly meeting on Friday.

The project includes drainage work, as well as the strengthening, raising and widening of embankments on the estuary, which will protect Shannon town, the airport and the industrial estate.

Senior Engineer with Clare County Council, Seán Lenihan says the scheme has to go through the planning process with An Bórd Pleanála.
