Clare County Council is calling on the Government to pass legislation that would establish a domestic violence register.
Clare’s elected representatives have unanimously backed a proposal calling for a ‘Jennie’s Law,’ in memory of the late Jennifer Poole.
24 year-old Mother of two, Jennifer Poole’s life was tragically taken from her in April of 2021, when she was violently murdered by her ex-boyfriend Gavin Murphy.
Unbeknownst to Jennie, he had a history of violence against women and had previously spent two years in jail for a knife attack against a former partner and her mother in 2015.
A campaign to develop ‘Jennie’s Law’ has since been launched by her family, this would create a Domestic Abuse Register in Ireland and criminal penalties for abusers who deceive partners about their past.
Newmarket-On-Fergus Fianna Fáil Councillor David Griffin, who brought the motion to Clare County Council, says it’s urgently needed.
According to Women’s Aid, more than a third of women who contacted their services last year had suffered abuse from a former partner.
Mayor of Ennis, Mary Howard, who also represents Rape Crisis MidWest on the Clare Local Area Network, believes the legislation will save lives.
