In September of last year, Taoiseach Enda Kenny revealed that negotiations had been underway to introduce a direct flight between Shannon and Providence in the US State of Rhode Island.

Speaking on a visit there, he said that businesses on both sides of the Atlantic would benefit, and that the flights had great potential.

Now, his visit to Rhode Island has been backed up by another from local officials in recent days.

Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council John Crowe, Council CEO Tom Coughlan and Chief Executive of Shannon Airport Neil Pakey were among those who paid what's described as a "courtesy visit" to the State House in Rhode Island.

No announcements were made, but talks were held with several officials and some elected representatives.

They also met with the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, which runs Rhode Island's TF Green Airport that would be linked with Shannon.
