Clare County Council is being accused of using biodiversity as a cop-out to avoid maintaining green spaces in Shannon.
It comes amid complaints in relation to the standard of grass cutting in areas such as Ballycasey Park and the green area running to Carraig Hill.
In a statement to Clare FM, Clare County Council says many spaces have been designated as flowering weadows as a result of the local authority’s involvement in the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan.
It claims “public consultation took place regarding the areas currently set aside for biodiversity meadows in Shannon”, while a further public consultation will take place at the end of the season to “review and assess the situation”.
Shannon-based tree surgeon Ronan McNamara, who was involved in grass cutting in the town for two years, claims it’s “like a jungle”.
