Concern has been expressed that the current cost of living crisis is driving some pensioners in Clare out of retirement.
It comes as new figures show a 13% jump in the number of over 65s in the workforce in the past year.
Figures published this week show that the number of over 65’s in the workforce is 100,500, up from 88,500 the year before.
The Daily Mail’s also reported that recruitment companies are seeing more people in their 60’s and 70’s applying for jobs, quoting one agency as saying the numbers are 3 or 4 times higher than normal.
Ireland’s first Digital Ambassador for Active Retirement Ireland says its welcome that this age cohort has the option to return to the workforce.
Quin man, Eugene Philips says however that while it wasn’t often spoken about by pensioners, its now becoming a daily topic of conversation.
A member of the Clare Older People’s Council says the biggest fear for pensioners is that the cost of living crisis will continue and worsen.
Maurice Harvey says there’s a number of steps Government can take to alleviate the hardship for pensioners but he says a cautious approach is needed.
