Ennis Economist Describes Government’s Coronavirus Economic Warning As “Sobering”

An Ennis economist has desribed as “sobering”, a warning that the economic consequences of COVID-19 will last until 2022, but says it’s our new reality.

It comes as the Finance Minister has warned of the worst recession since the Great Depression, with 220,000 jobs in Ireland to be lost, while our economy will take a 10% hit.

The stark warning goes on to say that it will be 2022 at least before we are back to where we were economically at the start of this year.

Ennis native Dr Micheál Collins, who is who is an assistant professor of social policy at UCD, says it’s important to remember that this is a different type of recession to a decade ago.
