An Ennis GP has expressed hope that confidence will be restored in the vaccine programme once a decision is made on the use of AstraZeneca.

The European Medicines Agency is due to issue a final decision on the vaccine late today, after vaccinations were paused in Ireland and 10 other EU countries over blood clot concerns.

30,000 doses of the AStraZeneca vaccine were due to be administered this week to healthcare workers and the medically vulnerable.

That process has been put on pause, but the HSE says it should be able to resume issuing the vaccine within a number of days, should the EMA reaffirm it’s safety this afternoon.

It’s holding an EGM, and has indicated that it will reaffirm the safety of the jab.

Ennis GP, Dr Maire Finn believes taking a cautious approach and suspending the rollout of the vaccine was the right decision.

She hopes it will be considered safe and put back into circulation again today.

Questions have been asked as to whether the disruption will lad to increased vaccine hesitancy, but in the short term it does also knock the roll out of the vaccines programme off track.

Junior Minister for European Affairs Thomas Byrne admits it won’t be possible to immediately resume issuing the AstraZeneca vaccine.
