15% Rise In Clare PUP Claimants Since Christmas

There’s been a 15 percent rise in the number of people in Clare accessing the Pandemic Unemployment Payment since Christmas.

More than 1,500 people here have received the payment this week.

Figures from the Department of Social Protection show 1,516 people in this county have had the PUP placed into their bank accounts this week.

That compares to 1,318 on December 21st, which a rise of nearly 200 people, or around 15 percent, in the space of a fortnight here.

Clare’s rise is slightly below the overall national jump, with nearly 67,000 employees now claiming the PUP across the country.

Nearly 1 in 5 of those are in the accommodation and food service sectors.

Around 1 in 10 PUP claimants were working in the construction industry previously.

Meanwhile, the total number of people to have accessed the Enhanced Illness Benefit payment in Clare has risen by 10 percent in the last fortnight alone.

The support, which requires medical certification, has been given to 483 people here since December 21st.

It means 5,358 people in Clare have availed of the Enhanced Illness Benefit payment since the onset of the pandemic.
