Cooperation Needed To Lower Clare Unemployment Rate

Calls have been made for joined-up thinking between Government, businesses and local communities in an effort to solve the scourge of unemployment in parts of Clare.

The latest figures from the Census show over 7,000 people were unemployed in Clare in April 2016 – 12.4% of the county’s population.

There was only a marginal increase in the county’s workforce since the previous census five years earlier, and three areas in particular have been singled out as struggling in this area.

The county has three unemployment blackspots – all of which have unemployment rates of 28 or 29%.

They are Kilrush, Kilkee and the electoral division of Ennis Urban 2 – which includes areas surrounding Drumbiggle, Clancy Park, Parnell Street and parts of the Kilrush road.

Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch believes the county’s assets aren’t being developed to their full potential.

Training, or a lack thereof, has also been cited as an issue for some.

Kilkee is an area which has traditionally relied on the tourism sector for jobs, so the census figure – recorded in April – would likely be lower if taken in the summer.

Local businessman and tourism consultant, Cillian Murphy insists communities need to be brought on board when plans to tackle the issue are being considered.
