A Clare Fine Gael Senator has said that claims made by some of those who are seeking to abolish the Seanad are demeaning politics as a profession.

The comments from North Clare Senator Martin Conway come just days before the people of Ireland go to the polls and decide on the future of the Upper House.
In the build-up to the referendum, those advocating a yes vote, including his own party, have argued that among the benefits of such a result would be a 33% reduction in the number of politicians.
However Senator Conway feels this merely adds to the cynicism surrounding politics.
