Irish Water has confirmed that works aimed at addressing ongoing water supply issues in parts of west Clare will begin in early 2021.

The utility has confirmed to Clare’s Independent TD Michael McNamara that a contractor has been appointed to carry out the proposed replacement of the old water main from Miltown Malbay to Mullagh.

Four outages in the area in recent weeks, resulting in a considerable number of homes and businesses losing supply have been the latest in ongoing disruptions for many years.

Irish Water is working with Clare County Council to minimise disruption to customers of surrounding group water schemes in the event of a future water main burst and discussions are to take place with the operators of four Group Water Schemes.

Four smaller water main replacement projects will also be completed by the end of this year, including at Main Street in Scarriff, from Castlecrine to Kilmurray, at Milltown Road in Tulla, and on Parnell Street in Ennis.
