The development at Illaunamanagh in Shannon has been subject to controversy since it was first mooted a number of years ago.
Businessman Jim Cranwell agreed a fee of 140 thousand euro with Clare County Council in April last year, and planning permission had already been secured, but local residents subsequently raised objections.
The developer was given two years to build the crematorium and Jim Cranwell has confirmed to Clare FM that the initial stages of construction are underway this week.
