It’s hoped construction will get underway on the West Clare Railway Greenway by 2024.
The 115 kilometre route, which will ultimately connect Ennis and Kilkee, will provide economic, social, health and environmental benefits for people in the county, as well as a major boost to the tourism sector.
The West Clare Railway was made infamous through Percy French’s song, “Are ye right there Michael, are ye right?” and, while the lyrics recall the unreliability of the old rail service, they’ve also helped build momentum for its reinstatement as a Greenway.
Clare County Council has this week announced the appointment of consultants to progress the first section of the Greenway between Kilrush and Kilkee.
Senior Engineer, Seán Lenihan has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that its a positive step forward for the project.
