Concerns have been raised over what’s been described as an “alarming” spate of alleged assaults and daily instances of intimidation at a popular Clare amenity.
It follows several reports of anti-social behaviour at Ballyalla Lake on the outskirts of Ennis.
Gardaí are currently investigating multiple incidents at Ballyalla over the past five weeks, for which some individuals had to receive treatment from paramedics before being brought to hospital.
The owner of Clare Kayak Hire, which has been operating there for the past twelve years, claims anti-social behaviour and intimidation, particularly from teenagers has become rampant.
Alan Coote says he’s regularly stopped people from breaking into his van and that he witnessed five older men being assaulted in unprovoked attacks on July 15th alone.
He’s told Clare FM’s Morning Focus the lack of available Gardaí is a serious problem.
A local representative, meanwhile, is renewing a call for more Gardaí to be stationed in Ennis and for a greater presence at Ballyalla at weekends and during good weather spells.
Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Antoinette Baker Bashua also wants to see CCTV cameras installed there as soon as possible.
