Concerns further small Clare schools could face closure threat

There are fears that further small national schools in Clare could be facing the threat of closure after the government confirmed its looking at the viability of two in the west of the county.

Clare FM understands that Scropul National School, near Mullagh and Baltard National School in Doonbeg- which between them have less than 20 pupils, are both in the firing line.

The Education Department has not confirmed the identity of the schools concerned, but says it is in negotiations with the patrons of two schools whose future viability has been questioned.

Lissycasey Councillor and retired teacher PJ Kelly is deeply concerned the closures could be the first of many announced in the county.
