In the last two years, the local authority paid over €1.9m in legal fees, though it notes that there were a large number of cases that concluded last year and that over €500,000 related to capital job codes which are largely covered by grants.
Nonetheless, the figures have been called into question by a number of Councillors, including West Clare Independent representative Christy Curtin.
The former Mayor of Clare has questioned whether savings could be achieved.
