Concern That North Clare Water Odour Will Deter Tourists

A North Clare Sinn Féin representative is worried tourism providers in the area will be negatively impacted by issues with the local water supply.

An algae discovered in the Lickeen Lake supply caused a mouldy odour to come from the water a number of weeks ago and despite works carried out by Irish Water, locals say the issue remains.

Irish Water says the algae remains in the water but is not affecting drinking quality – and they’re continuing to treat the supply.

However, Sinn Féin’s Noeleen Moran is concerned:

Irish Water Statement:

Irish Water is continuing to treat the water supply for parts of West and North Clare which has been affected by the presence of a seasonal algae in a local water source.
This algae does not affect drinking water quality but it can give a slight earthy taste and odour to the water.
In response to this, the water supply serving Lahinch, Ennistymon, Ballyvaughan, Liscannor, Doolin, Kilfenora and surrounding areas is being treated to address what is a seasonal issue.
Since this treatment was put in place, we have received no further complaints from customers but we will continue to monitor the water to ensure that it remains safe to drink and to minimise any taste or odour issues. The treatment will continue over the coming weeks while the algae remains in the water source.
Any customers with queries or concerns about the quality of their drinking water should contact the Irish Water customer care line at 1850 278 278
