Concern is being expressed that high numbers of empty business units in both Shannon and Kilrush could see both areas struggle economically in the coming years.
The West Clare town now has the highest commercial vacancy rate in Munster, with more than 1 in 4 business premises there lying empty according to figures from GeoDirectory.
Shannon’s vacancy rate of 23.7 percent is also nearly twice the national average.
