Fears Clare Creches Could Be Forced To Close Over Insurance Costs

The Taoiseach’s moved to reassure parents that creches will be open in the new year, despite controversy over high insurance premiums.

It’s after the withdrawal of one of two insurance providers from the Irish market.

Over 1,000 childcare facilities have been struggling to get insurance cover as a result.

Lifford Childcare Centre in Ennis has seen their insurance increase by 2,000 euro on account of the issue, despite receiving a 30% discount, and owner Claire Tuohy fears for many providers, this will be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Fianna Fáil leader Michael Martin has challenged the Taoiseach in the Dail over the issue this afternoon.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar insists crèches will open after the Christmas break.
