Irish Rail has confirmed that the Ennis to Limerick rail line is set to reopen next week, following a two-month closure due to flooding at Ballycar.

However, a restricted rail service will be in operation from Tuesday due to the COVID-19 outbreak with a reduced number of trains running on the line.

The line was forced to close in late February when floodwaters rose to a metre above the track at Ballycar, near Newmarket-on-Fergus, in what was the latest in a long line of flooding issues at that section of the rail line.

Work is now ongoing on a feasibility study to look at solutions to further mitigate against flooding, though that is subject to funding being granted.

Jane Cregan of Iarnród Éireann has been telling Clare FM’s James Mulhall that while it’s positive news to see the track up and running, they are warning passengers that it’s for essential travel only.
