Community Groups Honored By Clare County Council

Community and resident groups from across Clare have been honoured at the annual Clare County Council Community Awards night which took place last night.

 Winners of the ‘Best Kept Local Authority Estates’, ‘Clare in Bloom’ and Clare Pride of Place competitions have been announced.

Community and residents groups from across Clare gathered at Áras Contae on Chláir this evening (Monday, 12 October 2015) for the annual Clare County Council Community Awards Night during which the winners of the ‘Best Kept Local Authority Estates’, ‘Clare in Bloom’ and ‘Clare Pride of Place’ competitions for 2015 were announced.

In his opening address, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council Cllr. James Breen said: "These awards are a celebration of community spirit and pride of place, and serve to remind us of the enormous level of activity ongoing throughout the year in communities right across Clare. By hosting these awards, Clare County Council is publicly acknowledging the contribution of residents and communities to their local areas and thanking them for further enhancing the appearance of our County."

Cathaoirleach Breen also thanked the two sponsors of the Clare in Bloom Competition; ESB Moneypoint and Roche Ireland for their continued support.

Tom Coughlan, Chief Executive of Clare County Council stated: “Even though we are experiencing difficult times as a Council, I think it is vital to support communities and that is why we continue to stage these awards. It is our way of acknowledging that the work local communities carry out not only has a positive impact on their localities, but has a real benefit in terms of the economy and particularly in terms of tourism in County Clare."

Commenting on the Best Kept Local Authority Estates Competition, Mr. Coughlan said: “The Council is committed to implementing an Estate Management Strategy to improve the appearance of estates and indeed the quality of life of the residents within their estates. This Strategy is very much dependant on involvement of residents so much so that it will not be successful without their co-operation and involvement.”

Councillor Gerry Flynn, Cathaoirleach of the Planning & Housing SPC presented the awards for the Best Kept Local Authority Estates Competition.

The overall winner of the competition was Marian Estate, Kilkee which was awarded an engraved plaque, a cheque for €600 and the Mary Hennessy Memorial Award. Individual awards were also presented to Finnuremore Pak, Mullagh (Most Improved), Station Road, Lahinch and Connaught Road, Scariff (Special Youth Involvement) with Judges Special Awards going to Lus na Si, Miltown Malbay, Rooska Lisdoonvarna and St. Joseph’s Road, Ballyvaughan.

Category 1 of the competition for estates comprising up to 30 houses was won by Lower Main Street, Tulla which finished ahead of St. Josephs Rd., Ballyvaughan (2nd), and Finnuremore Park, Mullagh (3rd). Bishop Murphy Park, Parteen Cluain Chormaic, Kildysart Smithsgardens, Kilkee Lackyle, Whitegate, Clarisford Killaloe, Creag Bhriain, Corofin were ‘Highly Commended’. Church Road, Miltown Malbay were commended.

Category 2 for estates comprising 31-50 houses was won by Connaught Road, Scariff which finished ahead of Station Road Lahinch and Riverview, Tuamgraney (Joint 2nd), and Toormore, Ruan (3rd). Lus na Si, Miltown Malbay was Highly Commended and Clarehill, Clarecastle was Commended.

Category 3 of the competition for estates comprising 50 or more houses was won by Marian Estate Kilkee and Ballard Road, Miltown Malbay finished 2nd ahead of Derryvinna/Glor na Srutha, Clonlara 3rd, while Cappa Lodge, Sixmilebridge and Rooska, Lisdoonvarna were Highly Commended and Churchdrive/Aonach an Chláir, Clarecastle Commended.
