The Garda Commissioner has refused to comment on allegations that Gardai perjured themselves during the Jobstown trial – but suggested the issue will NOT be examined by an internal review.

Debate’s continuing meanwhile on whether Paul Murphy abused his Dáil privilege in raising the allegations yesterday.

The Dáil’s disciplinary committee, the CPP, met last night to consider Paul Murphy’s remarks yesterday, when he accused three Gardai of “co-ordinated perjury”.

Today the Garda Commissioner, Noirin O’Sullivan, said that would be a criminal matter – and should be referred to GSOC.

She also said the internal Garda inquiry into Jobstown can’t look into courts issues – suggesting the testimony given by members may not fall under its remit.

The CPP is going to get legal advice on Murphy’s claims – but People Before Profit’s Brid Smith, a member of the committee, says the timing of the whole case is suspicions.

Fine Gael’s junior minister Brendan Griffin, meanwhile, says the debate about abusing privilege shouldn’t distract from what actually happened on the day.

It may be some time before there’s any progress on the issue though – with the Dáil recess tomorrow, any legal advice won’t be considered until the autumn.
