Hundreds of farmers in Clare will receive a welcome boost following a decision by the Department of Agriculature to re-examine criteria for certain lands under the Basic Payment Scheme.
Concerns had been expressed over the eligability of the scheme after land for which farmers previously received payments became disqualified or were ineligable due to becoming part of and SPA or SAC under the birds directive.
The Department has now produced clearer criteria and are dropping the requirement to prove agricultural activity which Clare TD Michael McNamara believes was particularly contentious in the case of Slieve Aughty and other marginal lands.
