Clare’s Youngest Female Haulier Calls On Government To Make Career Accessible

Clare’s youngest female articulated lorry driver is calling on the government to take a proactive approach to entice young people into haulage.

Last year a shortage of almost 4,000 drivers was recorded following an uptick in driver retirements.

Quin native Sophie Howard, says at present a career in haulage isn’t appealing to young people, not just women, while the cost of living is forcing others abroad.

She claims backlogs in driving tests and difficulties getting insurance are the greatest obstacles for youth looking to get into the profession.
