The R474 Ennis to Miltown Malbay Road is currently impassable, particularly at the Hand Hill, due to significant accumulations of snow, with numerous cars abandoned on the route.

The R460 Inagh to Miltown Malbay road has also been identified as particularly hazardous with the Kildysart area subject to significant amounts of snowfall.

The N68 between Kilrush and Knockerra, the R463 between Tuamgraney and Ogonelloe and the N67 from Gregan’s Wood to Corkscrew Hill have also seen large volumes of snowfall resulting in dangerous driving conditions.

Inland areas are those worst affected with slightly milder conditions seen in coastal areas resulting in snow failing to stick to the ground.

Motorists advised to be aware of the possibility of flooding as snow melts and the local authority has reissued its advice to avoid all unnecessary journeys.

Shannon Airport, meanwhile, has confirmed that the base is fully operational, however delays to flights are expected as the day progresses.

The airport’s snow and ice worked through the night and are on hand to ensure the taxiways and runway remain clear.

Temporary runway closures at Manchester and Liverpool John Lennon Airports have exacerbated the possibility for delays, while two flights have had to divert to Shannon due to adverse conditions.

Passengers travelling to Shannon are advised to contact their airline for the latest flight information and to drive with caution, allowing extra time for their journey.
