Clare’s Playgrounds Re-Open Without Supervisory Staff

Clare County Council-owned playgrounds are open again today, despite some confusion surrounding government guidelines.

It had been suggested that playgrounds could only open if they were supervised, but the Council say it won’t be posting staff to playgrounds.

Instead, that supervision will be up to parents.

As part of Friday’s announcement on the re-opening of society, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar delivered welcome news to many children and parents when saying that playgrounds could re-open from today.

However, he also stated that playgrounds would have to be supervised, which is not normal practice.

This has since been clarified, with officials saying that Councils are not expected to post staff to playgrounds to ensure guidelines around hygiene and social distancing are followed.

Instead, the Council says, this will be up to parents or guardians, and signage has been erected to this effect.

Clare County Council says its four playgrounds in Ennis, at John O’Sullivan Park, Tim Smythe Park, Coote Park and Cloughleigh are all open today, along with the playground in Cappa, Kilrush.

They had been closed since March 15th.

The Council is also implementing what it calls ‘an enhanced cleansing regime’ for each playground.
