Clare’s Crime Prevention Officer is urging people not to be duped by the latest scam targeting mobile phone users.
It follows a warning from the National Cyber Security Centre that scammers are impersonating phone company representatives to access accounts and to order and steal valuable phones.
They use the “forgot password” option to send a verification code to the person’s phone and then use that code to complete an upgrade.
After the phone arrives at the customers house, they indicate an issue, offering a refund and to have the phone collected, leaving the customer without a phone, as well as a potential cost.
Sergeant Catriona Holohan, who’s based in the Crime Prevention Office at Ennis Garda Station is warning people thinking about upgrading their phones in the run up to Christmas, not to get caught out.
