Clare’s Aontú representative claims staffing deficits are preventing Local Authorities from repurposing vacant properties for residential use.
Figures released through a parliamentary question show that three former Garda Stations in Clare have been unoccupied for the last nine years.
Sales have been agreed for the former stations at Doonbeg & Lahinch, while Broadford station is being prepared for disposal.
Aontú’s Mid West Public Relation’s Officer, Eric Nelligan says county councils need support in clerical positions to avail of funds.

Statement from Clare County Council
“Clare County Council did undertake inspections of Broadford and Doonbeg Garda Stations and at that time both locations were deemed unsuitable for the delivery of social housing units.
Clare County Council did not have a business need to acquire the Garda Station in Lahinch at the price which was being sought, however, the Council did acquire the former Garda Station in Inagh, a small building that will be used for community purposes.”
