The Clare woman who secured the first ever SNA in Ireland for her daughter with additional needs has described the process of accessing supports as “crucifying” for families.
Anne Malone from Whitegate had to fight a prolonged campaign to secure a special needs assistant for her now 34 Year-old daughter Emma and ultimately paved the way for students with intellectual disabilities to remain in mainstream schools.
The spotlight now though is being shone on respite services , with claims families in East Clare in Shannon are competing for the services of a solitary respite house.
Anne says respite has become almost impossible to access.
