Clare’s voter turnout has been described as slow and dismal so far for the Presidential Election.
Just 10% of this county’s eligible electorate have cast a ballot ahead of the expected lunchtime rush.
Just over 9,400 people in Clare have so far had their say on who will be the next resident of Áras an Uachtaráin.
Until 10pm tonight, over 94,000 have the opportunity to elect either Catherine Connolly, Jim Gavin or Heather Humphrey’s as the next President.
Across the county, however, Presiding officers at various polling stations, have described the turnout as slow, dismal and trickling, with many expecting the lowest voter turnout in Clare’s history.
The highest voter turnout so far is in Clarecastle, where 12.6% of voters have had their say, Drumbiggle in Ennis is currently running at 11%, while polling booths in Quin, Newmarket and Shannon are all averaging 10%.
A low turnout had been widely expected particularly due to one candidate appearing on the ballot, having withdrawn from campaigning, while a targeted “Spoil the Vote” campaign is also expected to make an impact on counting day.
