The provision in the Planning and Development Bill is aimed at keeping off-licences away from historic or tourist areas in towns and cities.

The Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald says that a high number of such premises clustered together are leading to concerns over drinking in public places.

Charles O'Meara says their members are happy to work alongside off-licences, as long as they are properly regulated.
