The latest live register figures show a 4% drop in the number of people signing on in Clare, with 6,168 people now claiming some form of unemployment benefit.

According to the CSO, the largest drop was in Ennis, where 119 people left the dole queues, while in North Clare, 96 people signed off.

But in West Clare, the number of people on the live register dropped by only 24 to 961.

Kilrush Councillor Gabriel Keating admits its a small number but he believes a huge improvement is on the horizon.

East Clare saw the fewest number of people leaving the dole queues.

There are 841 people on the live register there, a drop of 21 on March figures.

Clonlara Councillor Michael Begley has described the figures as disappointing given the proximity to the Limerick and Shannon regions, where he says increased activity is expected on the market.

But he remains hopeful for the months ahead.
