The Chair of the Shannon Airport Oireachtas Group is refuting reports he’s calling for the reinstatement of the Shannon “stopover” rule.
The stopover rule forced half of all transatlantic flights coming to Ireland to touch down at the Clare base and was abolished in 2008 under the EU-US Open Skies Agreement.
According to a travel publication, Clare Fianna Fáil TD, Cathal Crowe, was seeking legislation demanding flights to land in Shannon similar to old regulation, leading to Dublin Airport CEO Kenny Jacobs labelling the plan as “bizarre”.
Speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus the Meelick Deputy claims the diversion of three of the weekly flights out of Dublin to Schiphol in Amsterdam to Shannon, would be hugely beneficial to the region.
He says rather than looking for the reinstatement of the stopover, he is instead calling for the Irish Aviation Authority to be cognisant of regional development in line with the Project Ireland 2040 plan.
