Clare TD Raises Concerns Over County Council Leadership With Taoiseach

A Clare Independent TD has raised concern over the leadership of Clare County Council with the Taoiseach.

Kilrush Deputy Violet-Anne Wynne claims she has been unable to secure a meeting with the local social housing executive despite persistent attempts.

There are currently 2,778 people on the council’s approved social housing list.

The demand is stemming from across the county, with over 1,190 applicants seeking a home in Ennis, 211 seeking a home in Shannon and for the remaining applicants, 35 different villages have been selected as their first preference.

At the beginning of the year, the council’s social housing directorate set a target of delivering 149 new homes, so far 75 have been completed, while works on the remaining units are at various stages of development.

The local authority also says its currently supporting around 80 clients who have been issued with a notice to quit.

However a Clare Independent TD believes the local authority’s commitment to social housing hasn’t been up to scratch.

Addressing the Taoiseach in the Dáil, Kilrush Deputy Violet-Anne Wynne accused Clare County Council of lacking respect, while constituents are left in distress.

The Department of Local Government is headed up by Housing Minister Fianna Fáil’s Darragh O’Brien.

However, speaking in response to Deputy Wynne, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that while Clare County Council is only accountable to its elected members, he would raise the matter with Junior Minister Kieran O’Donnell.
