Clare TD Claims It’s “Bonkers” That No Exceptional Circumstances Are Being Considered To Prevent Blackouts This Winter

A Clare TD claims it’s bonkers that exceptional circumstances aren’t being considered to prevent blackouts this winter.

It follows the publication of a new report into the country’s energy security, which looks at how best to progress the move away from from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Ireland could see floating terminals used to store gas supplies.

A floating Liquified Natual Gas facility is among the recommendations of a report on Ireland’s energy security, which has been published this week.

The independent report also mentions other potential mitigation measures, including onshore strategic gas storage, additional electricity interconnectors, biomass plants and hydrogen plants.

It also examines how best to move away from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

A Clare Independent TD claims successive Governments are responsible for this country becoming far too dependent on importing energy.

Scariff Deputy Michael McNamara believes we need to find ways of generating enough electricity ourselves to meet the needs of industry, households and institutions.

He’s criticised the Government for ruling out his suggestion to keep the Derrybrien Windfarm on the Clare/Galway border open in the meantime, saying “it’s bonkers” that exceptional circumstances aren’t being considered to prevent blackouts this winter.

Clare’s Green party Senator believes “it’s terrible” that Ireland didn’t move towards establishing our own energy two decades ago, saying we’ve come very late to the game.

But Inagh Senator Roisín Garvey is still optimistic that this country will become energy efficient and energy self-sufficient in the medium and long term, saying we have huge potential.

The independent report will now be examined by Government, which will consult with stakeholders on what options are most feasible.
