Plans to charge a 50% rates bill on vacant business premises could lead to further derelict buildings in Clare towns.
That’s the fear expressed to Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey who’s called for a re-think on plans to charge half the rates bill for unused commercial premises such as unoccupied buildings in the Shannon Free Zone, and retail units in Ennis.
While Deputy Carey told the Dail he’s in favour of most aspects of local government reform plans, including the abolition of town councils, he’s asked the Environment Minister to consider including exemptions for vacant business units.
