A Clare TD has branded the reopening of Ennis’s accident and emergency unit “an inevitability”.

Following a meeting this week between UHL management and the Oireachtas Health Committee, HSE Chief Executive Bernard Gloster has instructed HSE Midwest Regional Executive Officer Sandra Broderick to lead up a team examining the potential for capacity building in Ennis and Nenagh.

It comes one week after the HSE put 25 community rehabilitation beds for Clare out for tender, with these beds aimed at stemming UHL overcrowding while the 96-bed block currently under construction at the facility is being finished.

Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy and Oireachtas Health Committee member Cathal Crowe says the need for an A&E in this region can’t be ignored for much longer.
