Clare Students Express Relief Over Leaving Cert Plans

Students in Clare have expressed hope that the Department of Education won’t have to backtrack on plans for this year’s Leaving Cert.

It’s after teachers unions expressed concern over some aspects of the long awaited agreement, which was announced yesterday.

Students sitting the Leaving Cert at the end of the academic year will have the choice between a written test or a predicted grade in all subjects, while the Junior Cert has now been cancelled for the second year in a row.

It’s the intention that practicals and orals will go ahead for those who also opt to sit the written exam in that subject.

Cian Costello is among the students at Gaelcholáiste an Chláir who is weighing up the benefits of sitting this year’s exam.

He believes more students will take the test, now they’ve been given the option to take the higher grade.

One of the country’s largest teachers unions is concerned over aspects of this summer’s state exams.

The ASTI says it’s disappointed projects will not be counted towards students’ grades.

But another student at Gaelcholáiste an Chláir, Jake O’Loughlin hopes the Education Department won’t back-track on the plans, now that there’s finally been clarity.

The General Secretary of the TUI is rejecting claims teachers reputations have been damaged by the delay in reaching agreement on the Leaving Cert.

Michael Gillespie says this is the only country offering a choice for final exams.
