Clare Social Housing Delivery Down 40% In Past Year

The number of social homes built in Clare fell by more than 40% last year.

Department of Housing figures, which have just been published, show a rise in the number of people accessing housing supports across the county

Clare County Council constructed just 36 new social housing units last year, representing a 81% reduction from the 184 local authority builds recorded in 2022.

There was a notable increase in the number of social units delivered by not for-profit Approved Housing Bodies, rising from 57 to 93, while also last year developers built 22 social homes in this county under Part V Planning Obligations.

In total 151 social homes were built in Clare in 2023, marking a 41% reduction on the 254 units delivered in 2022.

The local authority also acquired 14 homes for use as social housing last year, with AHBs acquiring another 11.

Clare County Council is planning to deliver at least 60 affordable homes this year, with housing developments already in the pipeline for Ennis and Shannon.

Last year though, 27 households here were supported under other affordable housing streams, with 23 availing of the shared equity first home scheme and three more availing of vacant property refurbishment grants.

Just one Clare household issued with a notice to quit last year retained their accommodation under the cost rental tenant-in situ scheme.
