Clare’s Social Housing Chair claims the designation of the Shannon Electoral Area as a Rent Pressure Zone only scratches the surface of what’s required for the county.
The RPZ status means that rent increases for private tenancies in the town and its environs will now be capped at 2% per annum.
Across the county however, average rents have jumped by 13.8% in the last year, while applications for affordable housing are only available to residents in Shannon and Ennis, which is also a Rent Pressure Zone.
Shannon Independent Councillor, Gerry Flynn believes expanding the affordable home scheme, would attract more developers to Clare.
